USA, Arizona, Coconino, Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, N 33 deg 27' 33'', W 111 deg 56' 35'', 1200 ft., 366 m: accession number 1993-0799-01-3; originally received as a pad collected by Wendy C. Hodgson s. n. 2 July 1993 from Arizona, Coconino County, Near Lee's Ferry & Navajo Bridge, 1.3 miles north of SR 89 in the vicinity of the given coordinates as determined by google earth. Collector's notes: associated species-Eriogonum, Ephedra, Gutierrezia, Atriplex confertifolia-very little vegetation; plant description-Appears intermediate between good Opuntia basilaris and prickly pear ("basilaris") in the inner gorge of the Grand Canyon; habitat notes-Shale from Vermillion Cliffs and surrounding formations.
Plant height 10 inches; older pads gray-green, newer pads are yellow-green, no spines, tufts of glochids, 9 rows of areoles ca 1 cm apart; dry fruit collected 5 February 2013, color gray, diameter 10 mm, length 11 mm, sterile; flowers collected in the morning and in the afternoon, diameter 51-60 mm, length 73-91 mm, outer perianth light magenta with a yellow-green mid-stripe, inner perianth light magenta or hot pink, additional flowers collected in April 2013; stigma lobe number 5-7, cream or white; style pale magenta; filaments red or magenta.
