Alluvium. Soil in Kinston-Bibb series, sandy above, moist loamy-clayey below, overlying an underground seepage, periodically inundated.
Among prominent neighbors were Panicum dichotomiflorum, Fimbristylis vahlii, Rubus trivialis, and Hypericum hypericoides. Less evident were Mollugo verticillata, Cyperus strigosus, Fimbristylis autumnalis, Eclipta prostrata, and Leersia virginica. In the general vicinity were river-cypress, water oak, sweetgum, and spruce pine.
Individuals, all fertile, varied greatly in size. Scales of spikelets with green midribs and reddish-to golden-brown sides. Achenes tan, ca. 1 mm. long. Herbage generally light green. Blades paler on lower surface. Roots reddish.
