Habitat: Prairie fen dominated by Carex, Asteraceae, and grasses but encroachment by shrubs (Rubus, Cornus, Betula, Toxicodendron vernix). A few pockets and walls of shrub-carr and wooded fen. Evidence of some management. Hummocky in areas from Carex stricta, other areas dominated by other Carex and Dasiphora fruticosa. In central portion of fen, west of Rubus wall. Transition zone between Poaceae/Carex/Asteraceae meadow and a shrubbier zone. Shrubs include Betula pumila, Cornus, and Salix. Ground +/- level, moist.
Description: Population - dominant herb of area, less so as shrub density increases, no flowers or shoots. Associated with Solidago patula, Carex sterilis, and Thelypteris palustris.
